Dominica is home to some spectacular and unique wildlife, both on land and in the sea.
Broadwinged Hawks, Little Blue Herons, Hummingbirds, Anis and many other species of birds are seen daily at 3 Rivers.
If it is birds that you would like to see, then the two species of
indigenous parrot, The Sisserou and The Jaco are likely to visit us
while you are here, or say hi when you are out hiking.
A Serious expert guide can be hired in this field ; if you are keen he
is worth it. The main bird man is called bertrand, the bird man of
Dominica. He is able to choose which birds he wants you to see, call
them, and, believe it or not, moments later the same birds will be
fluttering around you! Dominica has about 176 different species of birds
on the island, all of which are stunningly beautiful.
Truly fascinating!

WHALES
Dominica’s waters host numerous whale populations, and so whale watching can be a truly exciting excursion.
So far, 22 different species of whales and dolphins have been
identified in the Dominica’s waters, including a 59 foot sperm whale and
some pretty large migratory singing humpbacked whales, which have two
blowholes on the top of their heads forming a balloon-shaped spout.
You may get lucky and see both on the same day.
The tour includes refreshments and you are sure to have a great day out at sea. Obviously, there can be no guarantee of a sighting, but the whale watching tour operators reckon you have a 90% chance of success.
SEA TURTLES
At 3 Rivers we are privileged to be only a short walk from one of the most popular turtle nesting beaches in Dominica, at Rosalie Bay.
Between about the end of March and September, three types of sea
turtle occasionally stop off to lay eggs : the Giant Leatherback, the
Hawksbill and the Green Turtle.
Later on in the year, their newly hatched offspring can be seen
scurrying down Rosalie Bay towards their new, watery home. There is a
sea turtle initiative in operation at the Rosalie beach, and the
Dominica sea turtles are monitored and tagged for conservation and
education purposes.
As long as you respect the few guidelines we will give you, you are
welcome to wander down to Rosalie bay beach in the hope of seeing The
Rosalie Sea Turtles in action on one of the most beautiful beaches in
Dominica, at Rosalie Bay. If you do choose to go, obviously there is no
guarantee that you will see them.
Whether or not you actually get to see the turtles, a quiet night on a moonlight beach is a pretty cool way to pass some time.
Access to the beach at Rosalie bay is free and public. Whilst at the beach, you may well meet the locals who work for the Dominica sea turtle conservation organsiation (DOMSETCO). If they give instructions , please listen to them. and they will be able to give you an insight into the habits of these wonderful creatures. We actively encourage donations to the guys who work for the Dominica Sea turtle conservation organisation DOMSETCO US$ 10 / EC$ 26 per person.
There are no poisonous snakes in Dominica, but there are a few boas around which will do you no harm.
Other wildlife to be found in the forest include iguanas, opossums (manicou), agouti (which is sort of a cross between a rat and a guinea pig), frogs (including the almost extinct and highly protected mountain chicken), and crabs.
